2 year update...........by Auntie Linda

                                                               Year Two
Bumps & Bruises

Harper can climb anything and everything. She is a dare devil and the most courageous 2 year old we have ever known. Her bumps and bruises all tell a story but doesn’t stop her from going higher. Robbie follows yet is a bit more cautious, unless you get him in a swimming pool which brings out his bravery in a way Harper cannot. In May, Harper sits with only her feet in the water and says, “Harper cold,” while Robbie is splashing away. Harper has a thing about getting her face wet and is working on tipping her head back in physical therapy.

Haircuts & Pigtails

Robbie's second haircut was done by dad in a close shave with mixed reviews. His smile and charm can wear any hair style. Harper is able to showcase pigtails, barrettes, fashion hats, and bows. She certainly is a girly girl in so many ways but with a tom-boy edge. We let her pick out her clothes every day and she can "almost" dress herself. She always picks out a dress or swim suit. We tell her how pretty she is and she loves to see herself and her brother in pictures and videos on our smart phones or just glance at herself in a mirror she is walking by.

Wagon as mode of transportation

The new mode of transportation is the Radio Flyer Wagon. They buckle themselves in and away they go.... the park, farmers markets, the zoo, cruising around the neighborhood. Parked inside the house they climb in and out, in and out. When they realize they buckled themselves in, they scream to be let loose only to buckle it again.

Books, Books, Books, and more Books

The twins got their first books from my cousin Chrissy Kometer who visited them in the NICU. Since that day, their love of books surpasses any other hobby and they still love to read their first nicu books. They get so excited to pick up their favorites and tell you all the object, animals, colors and shapes they have in them. They are incredibly smart and are thrilled to show off their new found words. The first favorites were "moon!!!", stars, airplane, ball, mama, nana and Robbie. Their first big words were "Guacamole!" and "Watermelon" and "Hippopotamus." Harper's first sentence was, "Duckieeeeeeeee where are youuuuuuuu?" It eventually became, "Robbieeeeee, where are youuuuu?"

Robbie's first sentence was, "Harper be careful." He loves to chat up a storm. In the mornings they have long, meaningful conversations in their cribs which their parents listen to on the baby monitor, but they say they really have no idea what the twins are talking about.

We can feed ourselves, thank you.

Nana continues to help with feeding time and wants to ensure they get more food inside than on the outside of them. But if you glance in at dinnertime at the Basaldu’s you will find Robbie and Harper very determined to keep the food on their fork all the way up to their mouths. They will try and try until they get it right. Or, if really hungry, dig in with their hands and maybe their toes too. Bowls often look like hats and will be tried on even if full of food. Didn’t think that one through did you Robbie? He will wear anything on his head except the adorable baseball hats we have all bought him.

Whatever you say, we can say too!

Think the kids are busy playing and aren’t listening to your conversation? Think again! The best multi-taskers ever, they repeat new words they hear coming out of your mouth. From "daddy don't do that" to “oh crap.” They are putting words together and continue to blow us away. They have 100s of words in their vocabulary. The nanny had started to write them down, but stopped after the first 100.

Spinning

Who can spin the longest without falling down? Robbie and Harper of course. I’m not sure who showed them or taught them but they are expert spinners. Robbie likes to flirt with girls who come over by showing off his spinning moves immediately. Enough said.

Switch!

Robbie likes to steal Harpers toy and take off running. Harper screams and runs after him. You would think Harper would get back at Robbie but she does not. She is so sweet and protective of Robbie, she shares, kisses and hugs Robbie, and when given a treat, says, “Robbie treat too” to ensure he will get one too. “Switch” is the term used to share or to give the other child a chance to play with the favorite toy of the day.

Robbie’s Timeouts

When Robbie is naughty, he knows to put himself in timeout which is the cutest thing you will ever see. He knows when he’s ready to come out. Technically it was taught to him after being warned to stop doing something like pulling someone's hair and he had to sit on the floor for 60 seconds. But eventually he started wondering, "Would I go to time-out for THIS behavior?" So he started asking, "Time out?" after spilling his milk, running outside without shoes on, or pushing his sister. "No Robbie, you don't have to go to time out unless you do it again." Sometimes he goes anyway and sits down and looks sad.

Harper,  a born gymnast

Every curb, plank or chair arm is a balance beam and did you know that under tables, there are uneven bars for swinging your hips off of? The day Harper goes to her first gymnastics class, we may have trouble getting her out. Grandpa Gary introduced her to a balance beam when he built her one just 3 inches off  the ground. She loved to walk on it back and forth and back and forth until everything she saw became a balance beam. She also loves summer saults and cart wheels but hasn't mastered them yet.

Eating is fun

Robbie loves to eat! He still uses the sign for “more” even though he can say it too. Their favorite snacks are “booberries” or raspberries and will down a pint in no time at all. Nana feeds them fresh fruit for snacks and when it's hot outside, a popsicle is their favorite treat. Robbie is a protein guy, wants summer sausage, cheese, hamburgers (no bun needed). Harper loves carbs, breads, pastas, and has a taste for more upscale food, the nicer the restaurant, the more she eats.

Manners

Harper has the best manners for a 2 year old. She says things like, “Thank you Robbie,” and “Please mama." It is shocking to hear a 2 year old say, "Thank you dada" when he gives her a bite of his ice cream. She always has good manners and doesn't miss. Robbie is learning, but can tend to use his adorable facial expressions to tell you how grateful he is for you. The kid melts hearts.

March of Dimes 2 year walk

Our family is grateful for the March of Dimes because they funded the research that helped develop the lung medication that is allowing so many more preemies to survive today. Since the lungs are the last organ to develop, it is the main reason a preemie may not survive or develop lung issues and asthma later in their lives. At the March of Dimes walk this year on the twins 2nd birthday they wanted to walk like everyone else, (sometimes walking backwards, something they love to show off). We did come in last place and the policeman asked us if we could move to the sidewalk so they
could open the street back up. But we made it to the finish line with much pride.

Jump, Jump!

Harper and Robbie LOVE to jump. My mom and I picked out the perfect birthday gift and put it together with help from the little ones. They now jump on their fully enclosed trampoline day and night.

Temper Tantrums.....:(

Harper seems to be experimenting with what she can get away with and just how much she is worshipped by her parents. She no longer wants to sit in her car seat ("Front seat Mommy") and she doesn't like to sit in a high chair. She is an independent girl but it is not time for driving and it's not good manners to stand at a table, so she is redirected daily, and does not like it. Her tantrums can last 20 minutes or so, and she has a lot of determination, but she eventually does the right thing when she is ignored and Robbie is getting all the attention from mom and dad.

Baseball

Of course Pete is still playing baseball and now it's a family activity almost every Sunday. The twins have their own T-Ball set and like to take turns swinging and putting the ball back up on the post. Robbie seems less interested in the game than Harper, he would prefer to strum a guitar or bang on his drums. But Harper throws the ball, then runs around pretend bases and always gets a home run apparently, because she does not stop running until she gets back where she started. She will even tap her bat on the home plate before she swings, apparently as she has seen her daddy do.

Twinkle twinkle little stars, do you know how loved you are........

Robbie melts hearts with his sweet smile.

Learn and Play Café. It seems crucial to find places to go that mom and dad can enjoy too.

Anything that pushes, Robbie will push, he has the upper body strength of an ox.

This can be seen any night at the Basaldu household at 8pm.

Her intensity is lovely. She is the academic.

Kid's Museum is a favorite spot

March of Dimes 4/12/2014. They were given purple bows and harper's skirt when we got there.

Their birthday present from mom and dad, a double swing.
(which seemed fine until Karla and I got there with the trampoline).

Their Physical Therapist Jasmin who helps them work out their left over preemie issues

His attention span is increasing

The Twins' nanny Alyssa, who teaches them amazing things

It was a big year for biking

and Splash Pads!!!!

and Farmer's Markets on Saturday mornings....

Robbie watches videos of himself with grandpa on his phone
Robbie loves his grandpa almost more than anyone.
He says goodnight to him every night from home.

Sometimes they do the exact same thing at the exact same time and they seem more like twins

Harper the fashionista showing off her pigtails and fashion eyewear.
Harper starting climbing quite early. Cautious Nana spots her.

Look nana, I can keep it on my head if I'm very still...

Robbie loves to make Harper laugh and what an infectious laugh it is.

Robs loves reading time with Nana. Can we get through another book before Harper wakes up?
Toast in one hand, oatmeal in the other. Harps is just showing off now.

Harper gets another perspective of her book with analytical uncle Rich.

Breakfast is comical with Robs using the big-boy fork.

Just another day out for a stroll.

1 Year Update

The Twins' have had an amazing year. The progress has been stunning to us. Here are some of the highlighted changes:

--We hired an incredible nanny who works with the twins 3 days a week. I was nervous about the transition but we talked about all my fears and anxieties and she has proven to be a wonderful, trustworthy educator. She is not allowed to Facebook, text, have friends over or take personal calls. Yes, I AM a boss now. She doesn't have to clean, do laundry or cook. She just has to interact with the kids, have craft time, flashcards, massage, music and strolling. My family stops by and visits spontaneously and when they walk in, she's marching, singing, dancing, playing on the floor. Pete and I fear she's a better parent than us, but we think she will be in our family for a long time. She may not look like a typical nanny, with her tattoos and ear gages, but if anyone was put on this earth to educate kids, it would be Alyssa. She has plans to be a grade school teacher someday.

--We moved into our new house in Downtown Gilbert. We love it and live so much closer to all the people who were complaining about our previous location. We plan to stay in this house throughout the kid's school years, and we already have visions of creating fun stuff in the backyard like mini houses or a mini baseball field.

--Both kids are taking swimming lessons and also spend time in Nana and Papa's pool when they are there twice a week. They love swimming and love being outdoors. Gary put a Costco sun shade over the pool to so they can swim during the hot afternoons. Leave it to Gary, he thinks of everything. Gary and Karla love the kids so much, and the kids love being at their little self made daycare. Karla has always been a very instinctual person, I don't question her decisions or give her any instructions like the controlling parent I can be with others. Caring for preemies can be a little different than a full term baby, but G&K have been there since day 1and have a good sense of preemie parenting and protecting.

--Both kids are walking, babbling up a storm, have a mouth full of teeth, and play and laugh all day together. They are never apart, and still sleep in the same room.

--Harper Update:
Harper has been walking for months and is a few weeks ahead of Robbie on most things, which is typical of boy/girl twins. She runs our house like a little CEO. Her first official word was "Ball" which was determined after Alyssa told us that first word has to be a word that they associate with it's meaning. She picked up a ball, said "ball" and then brought it over to us. That was the day Pete knew with all his heart that she would be his little ball player and steal his heart forever. Harper is a little spit fire and so fun to play with and observe all day. I don't think I have ever felt more loved than I do with my little girl. She laughs all day at anything I say, wants to be on my hip 24/7, and when we catch eyes across the room, she gives me a little smile of love.

--Robbie Update:
Robs is such a boy. He moves through the house with destruction on his mind. Slowly, room by room, we are finding ourselves repairing, gluing, and putting back together. If you think your house is baby proofed, bring a 1 year old boy to spend the day there. He will find anything that bends and bend it backwards until it snaps. He will find anything that is glued and unglue it. He will find anything that is stitched and pull the string until it falls apart. This kid is so strong he moves furniture. He will drag a dining room chair, which is pushing on another dining room chair, across the kitchen tiles. He is so happy and hungry. He eats all the leftovers and smiles and laughs all day. He is showing no signs of CP and is no longer wearing his orthodic boots. He's our brave little miracle boy who is constantly reminding me, "I tried to tell you, I was going to be fine."

April, 2013

Harper: Weighs about 15 pounds now, over 26 inches long. She is petite but sturdy. She crawls everywhere, & loves to walk on her hands if you hold her legs. She stands up by herself for about 5 seconds before plopping to the floor. She walks along furniture, and crawls up your legs if she feels scared. She is brave and courageous and strong most times, and she will plow over anything to get to what she wants, locked in and completely focused. Pete calls her the Tonka Truck. She will spot a toy she hasn’t played with for a while, crawl over a pillow, a diaper bag, Robbie’s legs, and will not stop until she gets there. She wants to be held a lot and doesn’t like it when mom has to leave to take a shower, so she sits outside the shower on the shower mat and waits. She doesn’t like it when the shower door is closed either, so water is drizzling on her the entire time.

She is always smiling, always energetic, and the first person to get her out of her crib in the morning gets a big smile with stretched out arms and big hugs. She is happiest in her Baby Bjorn where she can be elevated and see the world and what is happening. In this position, she will shop, walk outside, sit in a restaurant, and anything else the carrier wants to do. She giggles when daddy tickles her belly and it’s the sweetest sound you've ever heard. She is also a toy bully, if she sees something she wants, which is whatever Robbie is holding at the moment, she will go over and grab it from him (which is not allowed). When Robbie is done playing with her desired toy and picks up something else, she suddenly only wants whatever he just picked up.

She is the bell of the ball at a party, she loves excitement, people, activities, and stimulation. Sure the docs may someday say she has a bit of ADHD/Anxiety, but we like to call it spontaneous, creative, imaginative, and extroverted. At a flea market that had no air conditioning she was so hot we stripped her down to her bloomers only, and people took pictures of the petite baby in the puffy bloomers and hair bow, smiling away at her fans. She is spontaneous and impulsive. She climbs onto chairs, and tries to eat cat and dog food daily.

Harper is helmet free as of a few weeks ago, and so happy about it. We tried to put it back on her a few days after not wearing it, and she wouldn’t have any part of it. She ended up wearing it begrudgingly for about 16 weeks. In the final weeks, she was trying to pull it up off her head and could slide it up to her ears......we knew it was over. She did the same thing with her feeding tube in the Nicu until the nurses finally decided to leave it out and give her a bottle.

Robbie: Wherever Harper is, you can find Robbie. He is crawling right behind her, smiling away when she comes into the room. Together they have places to go, and Harper is leading the way. Robbie is a cautious crawler, paying attention to each movement. He is trying to pull himself up on furniture now and loves to have you help him stand up. He claps patty-cake and loves his ipad, cheering and squealing for his favorite characters. He’s a napper and very easy going. In a dark room, he can sleep 8-10 hours a night or take a 3-4 hour nap. But he is hungry all the time too, and was never happier than the day he was given a Cheerio. Robbie thought he won the lottery when he tasted big people food like mashed potatoes or a piece of watermelon. He looks at our plate of spaghetti like a puppy at a birthday party. He is a very sensitive boy and his cry will break your heart. But he’s not a push over, he will grab his toys back from the toy bully like nobody’s business. At times, they will play tug of war with an empty water bottle like it’s a million dollar prize. And it’s not about the water bottle, it can be any toy of the moment, it’s about the principle of not giving up a toy he wants to play with just because the toy bully decides she wants it right then.

Robbie smiles all day, at Harper, the cats, the dog, anyone who walks into the room. He swings, swims, and throws a ball over hand over and over and over with excitement. He is in physical therapy every week to try to prevent any possible side effects to his brain bleed and he gets massage about 3 times a day on his calves and arms. So far he is not showing signs of developmental delay, but he does have some muscle tightening. He also has the tiptoe walking that can affect some babies, and Nana and Pops took him in to get fitted for orthodics which he will wear like little shoes about 8 hours per day. The docs think if he was going to be showing signs of any disability it would be showing itself already on his left side primarily. His neurologist does not think he will have any symptoms from the bleed based on where the bleed was located. We continue to hope he doesn't have to live with challenges that will be painful or lessen his ability to do anything he wants, but no matter what he is our most perfect boy.

The most important thing to Robbie is spending time outside, and  he will do anything with you on a breezy day, with his hair blowing in the wind. Everyone comments that he looks exactly like Pete and Pete’s baby pictures are an exact replica. At times, he accepts the back burner position while Harper demands the attention of the room, but his adorable facial expressions and  funny noises keep him getting the personal attention he needs and adores so much. He's observant and charming, and does things at his own pace. He's a bit more calculated, thinks it through. His favorite movie is "42" which opened in AZ on his birthday, April 12th. This is, of course, the movie about Jackie Robinson who our boy was named after. I think Jackie is watching over my kid, rooting for him and helping him out along the way. I wrote a letter to his wife Rachel telling her about our boy.

We can't decide if Robbie's going to the be the good influence on Harper or if she's going to be the risk taking trouble maker that gets him to follow her. Or, as we have been told, perhaps they will switch personalities somewhere down the line, but that seems impossible to imagine.

They love swimming and their personal pools ease my anxiety.
Notice the Toy Bully wants only what he has.

My amazing & beautiful cousin Chris came to town and walked the
March for Babies with us. The last time she saw them
they were about 5 pounds in the hospital.

Pops teaching Robbie how to play piano at Pita Jungle

Harper was invited to attend a silent auction for HIV prevention at the
Phoenix Art Museum. We donated a large canvas painting, created
when I actually had time for personal hobbies, which sold for $5000

Harper at Spring Training

Nana Jessi came to town for Spring Training and loved up
the kids for as long as she could

Nurse Laurie gave them gifts and cake for their birthday.
We spent a few hours at the Nicu seeing the nurses and bringing cupcakes.
We also got to talk to a few freaked out moms who had tiny babies in incubators.
It was shocking to see how small the nicu babies were,
I could not take my eyes off them.

Nurse Lisa spent time with the kids at the March for Babies and
proudly showed off what a talented nurse can help achieve

There was a little garden specifically for the names of the little Nicu babies
who were taken from this earth too soon.
We thought a lot about some of the babies we had known in the nicu,
as well as our little angel friends Jimmy and Andrew
whose picture is above the playpen.

We wore signs on our backs during the walk.

Robbie at his first Giant's game. He loved being outside in the night time

My little newsboy

My college roommate Erica brought the kids
Oshkosh B'gosh from WI. So Adorbs!

The first day we walked into the Nicu,
Pete pointed to an alumni board and said, "That's the Goal!"
Nurse Laurie called us on Pete's birthday,
about a week after the twins' birthday, and said,
"We just put your picture up on the alumni board!"
It was a great present. This is that picture.

Karla has so much energy, she strolls for hours everyday,
swims, goes to doc appts, reads books, and
plays on the floor all day long.
There's nobody like Karla, as we know.

Bestie KK comes to town and sees the kids whenever she can.
It's always nice to have girl time too.

Harps didn't like the feel of the grass on her knees

Poor Robbie, he only wants to be outside,
but it's 100 degrees out there!

I didn't think she could get any out, but I was wrong

We sat at St. Marys Basilica on their birthday
and said Thank You for answered prayers

Sunglasses are the BEST, Robbies doing a photobomb
in the back just adoring his funny sister

Measuring heights for the 1 year birthday.
Did we ever think we would get here?
It seems impossible to believe it all turned out ok.
